Sports movies are often hit or miss experiments that are very hard to gauge if theyre worth your time from advertisements, especially when those advertisements are blaring modern day Rap during the 1940s. Instead, The finalized cut of 42 is a sincere and harsh film that details Jackie Robinsons game changing journey from playing in a Negro league to becoming the first African American to join the MLB. Chadwick Boseman also delivers an Oscar worthy performance emphatically embodying the legend. Also bolstering the atmosphere is a fearless script that may not use the heavy N word as much as Django Unchained but still manages to be uttered frequently and illicit emotional responses from viewers. One of the most memorable scenes in all of 2013 so far is when Jackie shatters his bat erupting into tears after repeatedly being racially harassed by the opposing teams coach. The movie also has Harrison Ford hamming it up coaching the Brooklyn Dodgers. 42 tackles hefty subject material and hits a Grand Slam where some films such as Red Tails end up exploitative and insulting.
