In Shane Meadows' This Is England, the punk scene of the 1980s served as a background for a film about kids escaping from boredom and apathy by becoming skinheads, and the darker racist element which emerged from this subculture. With We Are The Best!, Lukas Moodysson lightens the tone considerably, focusing on three rebellious young girls as they form a punk band of their own. To say that Bobo, Klara and Hedwig lack talent would be an understatement, but then punk was never about showing off musical ability and all about the attitude, which is something they have in spades. As kids who don't fit in and are considered "weird" by their fellow classmates, the only way to find a way of fitting in which is appropriate is to accentuate their differences, and Moodysson perfectly depicts their defiant, fun-loving attitude and the value of friendship. Unlike the minus degrees temperatures in Sweden, where the film is set, We Are The Best! has a warm heart.
