10 Great Asian Horror Movies You Probably Haven't Seen

8. Suicide Club

Train to Busan
Earthrise

The name alone should tell you that this is going to be a hard one to stomach.

When it comes to plot, trying to explain this movie would make anyone sound like a madman. After a group of 54 school girls commit mass suicide by jumping in front of a moving subway train, the police attempt to find out what exactly made them do it. From there, the movie takes twists and turns that will have your head spinning in pure confusion.

Director Sion Sono has a habit of making movies that force the audience to ask WTF more times than they can count. With Suicide Club though, he weaponizes this by taking something as distressing as suicide and turning it into an ambiguous social pandemic. Even more, the tone of the film itself isn't dark most of the time like you'd assume; instead, it's almost cheerful. This contrast of tone and content hits like a pound of bricks to the gut.

Also, there's a scene where a glam rock band performs a genuine bop after killing small animals and violently attacking several young women. Take that as you may.
