10 Great Asian Horror Movies You Probably Haven't Seen
3. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
If there is any justice in the world then Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum will go down in found footage horror history along the likes of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. It is just that good.
A group of livestreamers head to a notoriously haunted asylum to do an all-night broadcast in hopes of hitting one million views. Of course, things go wrong, and ratings become the least of their worries.
The two things this movie nails above everything else are pacing and atmosphere. As the viewer, you feel as though you're tied to the characters as they explore the asylum, allowing their fear to transfer into you. What makes it all the more effective is that the building itself constantly feels like a malicious force just waiting for the right moment to strike.
At first things may seem to be slow going, but once it starts revving up it doesn't give you a second to breathe. One of the best aspects about its pacing is that when it has a chance to go for a jumpscare, the film instead usually chooses to keep the tension going for an almost unbearable amount of time.
Put this one on if you're looking for a temporary case of insomnia.
