10 Great British Horror Films Of The Last Decade

5. Ghost Stories

Horror anthologies were once a staple of the British horror scene, largely thanks to bonafide classic Dead of Night, and the prolific work of Amicus Productions which released such portmanteau films as Asylum, and Vault of Horror, amongst others throughout the 1970s.

But since then, the British horror anthology has largely laid dormant, just waiting for someone to dare resurrect its old bones. Thankfully for us, Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman adapted their 2010 stage play of the same name into this well crafted spine-chilling 2017 film that contains one of the most unsettling segments of any horror anthology in recent memory.

The wrap around for Ghost Stories follows a sceptical professor on a personal crusade to debunk fraudulent psychics scamming money from hopeful people - but after an encounter with a famed paranormal investigator who inspired him, he tries to solve three cases of supposed paranormal activity. All three cases hold up on their own, but it’s the first one that stays in the memory.

Starring the inimitable Paul Whitehouse, we watch as he spends the night in a disused institution for women being haunted by the spirit of a young girl. It’s simple, effective, and guaranteed to creep you out.

Avid writer of nonsense. Can often be seen in his natural habitat watching far too many films and not enough TV. Occasionally plays on the Xbox and Megadrive whilst chastising himself for not writing more.
