10 Great British Sci-Fi Movies You've Probably Never Seen
1. Village Of The Damned
No doubt you've probably seen the iconic image of these glowing-eyed children before, but you might likely be thinking of the John Carpenter remake. Still, the original film from 1960 deserves your time as well, as it presents a terrifying perversion of the innocence of children, turning them into horrifying supernatural villains.
The film follows the events after a mysterious supernatural force overtakes the British village of Midwich. Afterwards, the female residents discover that they are all pregnant, eventually giving birth to a collection of platinum blonde-haired children with piercing stares, the ability to communicate telepathically, and thoroughly evil intentions.
Part of what makes these antagonists so terrifying is their lack of explanation. The film never delivers a rational reason for the event, making you feel just as in the dark as the protagonists. Additionally, the film's dated aspects give it an even creepier vibe, as the children behave in an alien way to modern youth, and the black and white imaging adds an additional uncanniness to the movie.
Despite its age, the film is still a tough watch, and the science fiction elements are so well combined with reality that it seems almost believable. Just be certain when you're watching to "beware the stare!".
