10 Great British Sci-Fi Movies You've Probably Never Seen

3. Brazil

If you ever wanted a glimpse into what you'd get by giving the notoriously eccentric Monty Python alumnus Terry Gilliam a swelling budget, then fret not, as you've already got it.

Brazil is considered one of the wildest and most creative science fiction movies out there, and it's safe to say that Gilliam went out of his way to create a spectacle with this flick.

The narrative follows Sam, a low-ranking bureaucrat played by Johnathan Pryce, who finds himself having daily dreams about a mysterious woman. Eventually, due to a technical fault involving a printer and a fly, he ends up involved in an unwarranted arrest and falls down a rabbit hole of bureaucracy, hyper-technology, and self-discovery, leading him to the woman in his strange dreams, and a terrorist plot.

It is a phenomenal experience that paints a very pessimistic view of the future. It shows the absurdity of bureaucracy as procedure and paperwork become overblown and ridiculous. This is further reflected in the world, which is comprised of dull greys and advanced - yet somehow archaic - technology.

Despite the rather severe subject matter, it's an overwhelmingly enjoyable flick full of outstanding practical effects and entertaining characters.
