10 Great (But Unexpected) Uses Of Music In Movies

3. Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) (Beetlejuice)

beetlejuicedayo Anything directed by Tim Burton is going to be weird, abstract and produce the unexpected. However, upon the release of Beetlejuice in 1988, no one could have anticipated this memorable musical scene. The Maitland family, Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis), having tragically died shortly after moving in to their dream home, are trying to drive out the Deetz family who moved in to the house following their deaths. In order to do so, they supernaturally initiate a scene in which the Deetz's and their dinner guests are forced to dance and mime along to the traditional Jamaican mento folk song Day-O (The Banana Boat Song), as performed by Harry Belafonte. Sadly for the Maitlands, this attempt at spooking the Deetz's fails spectacularly as both they and their guests enjoy the experience immensely. Cue the hiring of Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) who has more experience at getting rid of unwanted living guests, or "Bi0-Exorcism" as he calls it.
