10 Great Characters Ruined By Terrible Sequels

8. Peter Parker - Spider-Man 3

It Chapter Two Pennywise

Whether he's played by Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, or the OG Tobey Maguire, Peter Parker is a pretty consistent character.

The reliable self insert hero of an iconic comic book premised on the idea of a normal bloke becoming a hero, Peter's character is that of loveable dork who tries to do right by his friends and family whilst admitting he's far from infallible and has as many flaws as any of us.

For the first two films in Evil Dead director Sam Raimi's beloved mid-noughts Spider-Man trilogy, this characterisation shines through to a tee. Nervy, shy, and prone to moments of wit, charm, and bravado as well as real heroism, Maguire's Parker is a believable and likeable hero.

Then come 2007's muddled, over-complicated Spider-Man 3, he becomes... Whatever that Venom dance scene was meant to be.

Suddenly aggressively goofy and cartoonishly un-self-aware, Parker becomes a swaggering self parody when he dons the Venom suit. Obviously the symbiote is intended to change his personality, but instead the suit seems to make him utterly insane, and once he's back to himself the damage has been done and there's no un-seeing Maguire's floppy Fall Out Boy do.
