10 Great Disney Movies You've Probably Never Heard Of
4. Treasure Planet
Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island is a literary classic. The tale of Jim Hawkins, the Hispaniola and classic villain Long John Silver is a powerful story of greed and deception, but most importantly, adventure. The concept has traditionally been presented in its original pirate form in all adaptations, but Disney went in a unique direction with this property.
Taking the story of Jim Hawkins joining the crew of the Hispaniola and finding the titular island is relocated into the stars, Treasure Planet made these changes to generate an original and unique response to the traditional tale. It works beautifully, as the new setting is unbelievably fun to explore. Space exploration has such a grand sense of scope to it, and that comes across perfectly in the film.
There was even a sequel planned which would have seen Willem Dafoe take on the role of Ironbeard, but owing to the unsuccessful box office gathered by the first instalment this was cancelled. It is such a tragedy as the film had great potential for further development.
