10 Great Disney Movies You've Probably Never Heard Of
3. Brother Bear
There is a morbid irony to this film that makes its message and general tone unbelievably emotional despite the bright colours and fun characters. It genuinely presents a compelling journey of character growth and development whilst still delivering on a fun adventure which has some decent laughs.
The narrative of the feature tells the tale of Kenai - voiced by Joaquin Phoenix - as he is turned into a bear as punishment for killing one needlessly. He is then followed by a talkative cub who seems to be the only person willing to help him get back to his body. Without spoiling it, there is a tragic irony to this pairing that makes the film heart-breaking.
It certainly has its flaws. But the incredible setting and powerful narrative make it a worthwhile investment. The cast is filled with fantastic voices such as Michael Clarke Duncan, Joan Copeland and Rick Moranis. It has a great personality, and it is a real shame that the film is not remembered more fondly.
There is a sequel, but in a way this kind of sours the journey of the first film. Ultimately, it deserves more attention despite its flaws.
