10 Great Eco-Horror Films You Need To See
5. Them! (1954)
Them! is an absolute classic.
The 1950s were full of ‘nuclear monster’, ‘big bug’ films and Them! is right up there with the very best. The film follows the discovery of a nest of gigantic radiated ants in New Mexico (the result of Trinity, the first ever nuclear test) who become a national threat after some escape to create new nests. The film questions science’s amoral attitude and confront us with the unexpected side-effects of our Nuclear Age.
Although it’s not strictly relevant now, the fear of repercussions from nuclear experimentation was very real in the 1950s. And, let’s face it, giant ants are pretty damn scary.
