10 Great Eco-Horror Films You Need To See

4. The Swarm (1978)

The Swarm
Warner Bros.

More relevant today because of our better understanding of their important place in our eco-system is The Swarm, about a killer bee invasion in Texas. These bees are Africanised Bees, a real-life man-made hybrid first bred in Brazil. Scientists intervened in the natural order in the hopes of creating a bee that could create honey in warmer climates.

The Swarm is an over-exaggerated look at these vicious bees, but the over-exaggeratedness doesn’t make it any less scary. Two or three regular bees flying too close to your beer is scary, never mind a large swarm of bees intent on killing any threat, including their human makers. It’s the timeless eco-horror/scientific question of ‘just because we can, does that mean we should?’
