10 Great Films You Can't Admit You Love (And Why)
3. The Fountain
The Fountain is a 2006 film directed by Darren Aronofsky. Sandwiched between Requiem For A Dream and The Wrestler, it's easy to see why a movie set in three different time periods (one of which is Hugh Jackman floating through space in a bubble) might not be regarded as highly as the others.
For many, The Fountain is a film with a concept too grandiose and too bonkers to ever truly work. But it's this blind ambition - coupled with the sincerity and emotion displayed by Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz - that makes it so appealing.
The problem is that when a film shoots extremely high and doesn't exactly meet the mark for a lot of people, an easy criticism to level is that it's "pretentious".
If you want someone to call you a pretentious b*stard, just start telling people how much you love Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain. Which is a shame, really, because it truly is terrific.
