Remember kids, drugs are bad.

In Inner Demons, a reality TV crew follows the story of a teenage drug addict, Carson, as she plunges deeper into her addiction. The more they investigate though, the clearer it becomes that maybe addiction isn't the only demon living inside her.

Equating addiction with demonic possession can easily come off as cheap and exploitative, as one is a proven illness that countless people around the world suffer from, and the other simply isn't. Addicts are the butt of everyone's jokes, and it's easy to portray addiction as just that, a joke. Where Inner Demons succeeds however is in how empathetic and respectful it is towards those who are affected by the disease.

The way in which characters in the movie are so willing to exploit Carson's pain for their own benefit comes across as so true to life that it almost hurts. Even her own family treat her less like a person and more as an object to project their own denial and insecurities on. It's almost as if what's supposed to be her support network instead acts as an agent of escalation, making for a movie that's just as heartbreaking as it is horrifying.
