10 Great Found-Footage Horror Movies You've Probably Never Seen

6. Butterfly Kisses

Inner Demons
Four Fingered Films

A found footage movie about people literally finding footage? Talk about meta.

The narrative of Butterfly Kisses is essentially divided into two connected halves. One follows the past where the two film students record themselves investigating the urban legend of cryptid Peeping Tom, while the other follows the present where a struggling filmmaker is attempting to put the pieces of the past together and pass the story off as his own.

Despite the creepy creature known as Peeping Tom being terrifying enough to give The Babadook a run for its money, it really plays second fiddle to the psychological horror at the centre of the film's story. Even though both parts of the narrative are different, they are thematically the same in that each follows people in over their heads, pursuing something that is not for them. Therefore, when past and present eventually meet, it feels like the inevitable closing of some sort of unavoidable cosmic loop.

At its heart, Butterfly Kisses is a horror movie about cycles, and how if we do not check ourselves we may very well likely wreck ourselves.
