10 Great Ghost Movies (No One Ever Talks About)
1. The Changeling
Released in 1980 (and not to be confused with the stellar, disturbing true life drama Changeling from 2009), The Changeling is a disarmingly simple, but all the more alarmingly scary, piece of ghost fiction.
This spare, small scale horror from the early eighties deserves to be mentioned alongside the likes of The Exorcist and The Omen, and decades after its release, this unheralded film remains one of the horror genre's hidden gems.
Following a heartbroken composer who retreats to a secluded house after a traumatic loss, this movie inspired The Descent’s tactic of opening with an all too realistic tragedy before introducing more explicitly horror-based elements to the story.
Subtle but intense, the gradually rising tension of this troubled man’s haunting leads to some unforgettably scary sequences along with some moving character drama which makes the dark story's terror even more effective.
Like later films it inspired such as The Others, the film barely shows any onscreen violence or horror, leaving almost everything uncomfortably confined to the viewer's chilled imagination.
