Ti West's third foray into horror filmmaking, The House Of The Devil is an exceptional picture that makes the most of its '80s setting through the use of stylistic devices of the time to create a slow-burn thriller that cemented the director as a maestro of the genre.

In addition to its reverent filmmaking choices, the movie's commentary on the '80s Satanic moral panic works due to its evocation of themes such as Black Christmas and Rosemary's Baby. It earns a spot on this list due to the absolutely brutal way one of its characters, Megan (Greta Gerwig), is killed and how her murder impacted the story and her friend Samantha (Jocelin Donahue).

After reluctantly dropping Sam at an off-putting babysitting gig, Megan encounters a seemingly kind stranger named Victor who she gets along with well at first, until it is revealed that she is not the babysitter. At this point Victor coldly shoots Megan in the head and makes his way to Samantha.

Megan's death comes out of nowhere and its sheer bloody nature sets the movie's tone and braces audiences for the gore that is to come.
