10 Great Horror Movie Characters Who Die At The Beginning
7. Annie Marshall - It Follows
This modern-day indie horror classic benefits from stylish direction, committed performances and a somewhat absurd premise that has interesting commentary beneath it on sexual intimacy and the unfortunate violence that sometimes accompanies it.
David Robert Mitchell's flick kicks off with a terrified Annie Marshall running away from an unseen antagonist. Her fear of her pursuer is so palpable that she turns down help from her father and neighbour and instead heads to a nearby beach where she bids her family farewell and is then found dead not long after.
While Annie may be a minor character in the larger scheme of things, her death is still important to the story for a number of reasons. Beyond kicking the movie's events into motion, her untimely and gruesome demise highlights Jeff's desperation in getting rid of the entity (as well as his disregard for his sexual partners) and the predatory nature of the antagonistic Entity plaguing the characters.
