10 Great Horror Movies That Are Ugly On Purpose
9. Uzumaki
When you adapt the work of the legendary horror artist Junji Ito, you shouldn't expect to win any beauty contests.
Some horror movies try to present curses with cool VFX, dark worlds or big shocking moments. But, this movie - which follows a fictional Japanese town's descent into a curse relating to spirals - doesn't take a page out of their books. Instead, Uzumaki presents an oppressive horror thanks to the focus on ugly visuals, which you can see clearly in the desaturated colour choices.
When you think of the colour green in movies, you'll probably imagine the unsettling hues of The Matrix, which made the "real" world seem disingenuous. Well, throw that aside because Uzumaki uses a similar style to make its visuals way uglier, with a green/grey colour palette that makes the movie seem sickly and unhealthy. The ugliness of the colour scheme makes you feel like you're playing witness to a town succumbing to an inescapable doom.
There's also a constant use of close-ups which bring you right into the faces of the townsfolk. Oftentimes they're pulling ugly faces that could make kids in the street cry and might do the same to you too. This, combined with the vomit-like colours, makes Uzumaki an ugly movie for the ages.
