10 Great Horror Movies That Are Ugly On Purpose
7. The Wolf House
Perhaps one of the most creative horror movies to come out of the last few years, The Wolf House is an arthouse (gosh, that's a lot of houses) horror that depicts an escapee from a cult who tries to live in an abandoned shack alongside two pigs. Despite being a creatively beautiful concept, it's also ugly as all hell.
The whole film is crafted with stop-motion paper-mâché models, and it doesn't take long to realise it will be a bumpy ride - in all the best ways. The models have an uncanny look, appearing lifelike and creepy simultaneously. Plus, the environment itself shapes and moulds to the inner consciousness of the lead character, making it a gross shifting locale that you never get used to.
Another aspect of its ugliness comes from the deliberate efforts to show the animation process. There are plenty of times when you'll see strings and wires used to keep the models in place coming and going and always making you aware that you're watching animation. It simply serves to remind you of how much hard work went into making this stunning yet hideous horror.
