10 Great Horror Movies That Are Ugly On Purpose
3. Bad Taste
If you want to make a film but don't have a large budget, should you try to hide its cheapness or embrace it? Well, the legendary Peter Jackson was faced with this quandary in his first feature, and he opted for the latter option, and hard!
The early work of Peter Jackson - before he became a fantasy legend with Lord of the Rings - is a shocking well of depravity. His earliest flicks like Braindead and Meet The Feebles are deep dives into deliberate ugliness, but no project of his holds a candle to the visuals of Bad Taste.
This flick depicts the events after a small town in New Zealand is harvested by aliens for fast food. The whole thing was filmed on a 25-year-old Bolex camera, which gave it a naturally gritty and cheap look. Jackson embraced this cheapness by including tonnes of goofy practical effects, which were so full of gore that the film was banned in Queensland.
Bad Taste is a movie that utterly indulges in the ugliness of the splatter genre. It's gross, unpleasant and an absolute delight, adhering to its namesake by not giving a damn whether you think it's in good taste or not.
