10 Great Horror Movies That Are Ugly On Purpose
4. Horrors Of Malformed Men
It's great when a horror movie can live up to its namesake. Fright Night is frightening, Sinister is sinister, and Terrifier is terrifying. Then there's Horrors of Malformed Men; if you haven't guessed it yet, this movie is best described as malformed.
The film takes place on an island led by a mad scientist and full of deformed experiments, and that's where the first of this movie's ugly points rears its head. The titular malformed men (and women) are horrible to look at. These gross human/animal hybrids are brought to life with cheap visual effects. Still, the campy prosthetics only add to the movie's vulgarity as it makes the creations seem like scientific abominations, which they are.
This movie aimed to create something controversial and shocking. So it wasn't just filled to the brim with ugly visuals but also excessive sexuality and exploitation. This is why the grotesque aesthetic and surreal imagery worked so hard to be as vulgar as possible.
Horrors of Malformed Men is considered by many to be a precursor to Toei Company's incredibly sexual and controversial "Pinky Violence" movies. So, you have this film to thank for titles like School of the Holy Beast and Deep Throat In Tokyo - both of which are as depraved as they sound.
