"Coffin Joe", aka Zé do Caixão, is actually a fairly well-known figure in the annals of horror history. As such, it almost beggars belief that his introductory bow, At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul - let alone the entire Coffin Joe trilogy! - is still unavailable for online streaming anywhere.

For Western audiences, this is likely due to the fact that the aforementioned trilogy hails from the unexpected territory of Brazil. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul follows a depraved undertaker who believes that he can attain everlasting life by having a son with the "perfect woman".

Quelle surprise, this all descends into unabashed sh*tshow territory in short order. Thankfully, what doesn't diminish in the slightest across 84 ludicrous minutes is the film's entertainment factor. The black-and-white cinematography lends the inescapable aura of classical filmmaking, which is sharply juxtaposed against the directorial efforts of someone who apparently watched Evil Dead all the way back in 1960.

All of this sounds like a veritable car crash on paper, but At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul is a riotous watch, with José Mojica Marins' picture transcending the boundaries of 1960s filmmaking. It's an absolute tragedy that horrified contemporary audiences were completely oblivious to that fact.
