A major accomplishment of Charlie Kaufman's brilliant adaption of Iain Reid's mind-bending novel is that it somehow flawlessly depicts all the complexities of romance without actually having one.
While on a road trip with her boyfriend Jake, a young woman starts to get the sinking feeling that nothing is as it seems. As it turns out, that feeling is more to the truth than even she is.
In the same way the movie is like an inkblot test for how one sees the human psyche, it is also one for how a person sees relationships. While there are a few very clear messages, like the innate sexism of the manic pixie dream girl trope, for the most part, what you see is a reflection of your own feelings.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things isn't trying to tell you much of anything. Instead, the movie acts as a self-evaluation of sorts, forcing you to take a good, hard look at yourself in ways that will make you uncomfortable.
Sometimes, we need to be grabbed by the back of the head and made to gaze at ourselves in the mirror for our own good. Long after the credits are over, the film's grip will still be deeply felt.
