The lowest budget movie on this list is also one of the highest earners at the box office, notwithstanding the fact that it has the someone questionable honour of introducing the world to the found footage horror subgenre. If any film proves that all you need is a camera and a good idea for cinematic success, then The Blair Witch Project is it. Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez sent their three actors out into the woods with some provisions and camcorders and got them to follow mysterious clues - when night fell they set about scaring them witless with audio recordings of children's screams and left them strange little trinkets made out of sticks. The result is a fine example of the "less is more" school of horror; an unsettling, atmospheric ghost story which proved to be hugely popular with audiences. If you want to make a fortune from a low budget movie, Halloween, Night of the Living Dead and The Blair Witch Project prove that all you need to do is reinvent the horror genre. Easier said than done. Budget: $25,000 Box office: $248.6 million Can you think of any other great low budget horror movies which cleaned up at the box office?
