10 Great Low Budget Movies Which Cleaned Up At The Box Office

2. Mad Max

It's been a fair few years since Mel Gibson was flavour of the month, notwithstanding his admittedly entertaining appearance in The Expendables 3 as the villain. Openly bigoted remarks about Jews, it seems, don't go down too well in Tinseltown. The film which launched Gibson on the path to stardom is something of an anomaly when it comes to low budget movies in that it is an action movie, a genre which is harder than most to do well without some serious cash in the bank. George Miller directs with such assurance and confidence, however, making the most of the sparse Australian landscape, that the low budget is virtually unnoticable. Thankfully Miller's returned to helm the latest installment, and with current flavour of the month (or year) Tom Hardy taking over the title role it could be one worth checking out. Budget: $400,000 Box office: $100 million
