While Johnny Depp was already famous, his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies made him a superstar. The first movie caught film-goers off guard as little was expected from a movie based on a Disneyland ride. In the end, it was a huge hit that became one of the biggest franchises in film history.

It didn't take long for the franchise to start cranking out duds that still somehow made money, which replaced wide-eyed charm and wonder with impenetrable lore and nonsense.

The following movies fell too deep into the strange supernatural elements, becoming overloaded with incomprehensible plot points that required a lot of expository scenes to make sense. Also, they leaned way too hard on Jack Sparrow, a character that became increasingly exhausting as the series went on, believing that one note to matter more than anything else.

They were wrong and The Pirates of the Caribbean sequels were less adventure films and more Johnny Depp pirate sketches.
