10 Great Movie Stories Wasted On Terrible Sequels

4. Lloyd And Harry Seek Out Harry's Daughter - Dumb And Dumber 2

Dumb and Dumber was one of those guilty comedy pleasures that surprisingly aged well, The Farrelly Brothers creating a great comedy film that refused to take itself too seriously. Most importantly the film repeatedly poked fun at our loveable leads, garnering laughs from their simple minded goofiness. The film was a massive financial success, but has also been looked on fondly by critics retrospectively.

The sequel starts off promisingly enough with an absolute cracker of a story to justify the gap in time between sequels. The hilarious opening sequence sees Jim Carrey's Lloyd reveal that his apparent comatose state for the last twenty years was actually a prank he was pulling on Jeff Daniels' Harry.

There was also a host of potential comic moments to come out of the duo's search for and reunion with Harry's long lost daughter, especially when it becomes less clear if he or Lloyd is actually the Father.

Unfortunately the movie is largely a laugh free zone, Lloyd and Harry transforming from goofy to assholes. Having the jokes largely expended on innocent characters rather than on our lead duo is what the Farrelly Brothers get majorly wrong here. It's almost like they forgot to watch the first film again to see what made it funny, and instead asked Carrey and Daniels to be as mean and awful as possible and hope that worked. No surprises, it doesn't.
