10 Great Movies About Hollywood
5. Maps To The Stars (2014)
From director David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome, Crash), Maps To The Stars sees a fading Hollywood actress (Julianne Moore) attempt to boost her career by portraying her own famous mother on screen.
Featuring roles from Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska and John Cusack, Maps To The Stars also portrays a spoiled former child star, a pyromaniac trying to straighten out her life, a celebrity psychologist with a shocking family secret, and an aspiring screenwriter, with all of these characters' stories coming together to form a bleak and frank insight to the Hollywood machine.
Unafraid to tackle the idea of the celebrity, from the young to the fading, Bruce Wagner's script allows Cronenberg to completely lay bare the seedy, messed-up side of Hollywood and the price of fame.
Moore is a particular stand-out, her performance as protagonist Havana Segrand anchoring the dream-like sequences that weave the film together.
Dark, darkly funny, honest and horrid, Maps To The Stars is one of Cronenberg's most daring and culturally relevant films - a slice of satire with unforgettable characters and a plot which never lets you go.
