1. Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
Making a movie can be a stressful, dangerous, expensive and eventually rewarding experience. No better example of this is shown in Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, a 1991 documentary about the making of Francis Ford Coppola's now classic Apocalypse Now. Shown primarily through archived footage shot by Coppola's wife Eleanor during production, we see first hand how after putting up his entire life earnings into financing Apocalypse Now, one man can make a film and almost lose his mind doing so. During the production's 14 month schedule, Coppola is plagued with Typhoons destroying sets, star Martin Sheen suffering a heart attack, numerous script rewrites, and Marlon Brando being....well, Marlon Brando. If you ever dreamed of making movies for a living watch this outstanding doc first before jumping in. So there's our list. Anything we missed? Do let us know...
