10 Great Movies About Time Travel
1. Groundhog Day (1993)
Groundhog Day debuted the time loop scenario, and it's never been topped.
Starring a career-best Bill Murray as an arrogant and disgruntled weatherman caught reliving the same day over and over again in a town he hates, it works wonders with its simple structure to create a film which is as funny as it is tragic, and as strangely relatable as it is intelligent.
Written and directed by Harold Ramis, the film is perfectly led by Murray, who captures the hilarity, horror and sadness of his predicament, whilst falling deeper and deeper in love with a woman (Andie MacDowell) who never remembers their time together.
Philosophical, endlessly quotable and brilliantly ambiguous (why Murray is trapped in the time loop is never explained), Groundhog Day is possibly the best time travel movie ever made, as well as one of the very best films of the 90s.
