12 Monkeys' plot is simple, on paper: A deadly virus has wiped out most of humanity, and in a distant, dystopic future Bruce Willis (who else?) is sent back in time to figure out where it came from.
An incredibly bizarre sci-fi thriller which sports an entertainingly off-the-wall performance from co-star Brad Pitt and a strong leading turn from a resigned and uncertain Willis, 12 Monkeys features a large variety of unforgettable characters, dramatic human conflict and a time travel narrative which is both complex but surprisingly easy to follow.
Though there are moments in the story that can be picked apart by attentive audiences, the film's cast, bleak worldview, action sequences and remarkable set pieces make it a sci-fi cult classic that's very hard to forget, and deserves to be dug back up by anyone seeking a time travel flick with energy to spare.
