10 Great Movies About Time Travel
3. Arrival (2016)
Arrival is a time travel movie, though it doesn't look that way. It follows a linguist (Amy Adams) and a physicist (Jeremy Renner) as they attempt to make contact with some visiting aliens who may or may not be hostile.
In their studies, the pair are able to establish a means of communication, but Adams soon learns that the aliens have the ability to see and manipulate the future, and that many of her own "memories" haven't actually happened yet.
It's a complex yarn - courtesy of the frequently challenging filmmaker Denis Villeneuve - and one which constantly trips audiences up with its audacious narrative structure, rich character development and increasingly bold plot twists.
As with several films on this list, there is much more enjoyment to be found in Arrival if you watch it more than once, but even on first viewing it's guaranteed to blow you away and leave you reeling from how it comes to its ingenious conclusion.
