10 Great Movies It’s Cool To Hate

7. La La Land

It’s only been out for a year, but the haters already have a few salty things to say about Damien Chazelle’s musical romantic comedy La La Land. It didn’t even take a whole 12 months for them to start piling on the hate really. You could practically hear the collective sneer earlier this year after that embarrassing Oscar flub when it was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture winner.

It’s too derivative of MGM musicals of yore, they cry. Or it’s too !*$% optimistic and brightly-coloured and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are clearly no Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. There are far too many Toyota Priuses zooming around for a film about struggling actors and musicians and Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian is the quintessential white saviour singlehandedly rescuing Los Angeles’ jazz scene.

Okay, that last point has some merit. But as for some of the other criticisms, what’s so wrong with paying homage to films of yesteryear? What’s so bad about an exuberant movie that takes such delight in itself? Why do you hate Priuses so much? You bunch of miseries.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
