10 Great Movies It’s Cool To Hate

2. Fight Club

The first rule of David Fincher’s Fight Club is that you do not admit that you love Fight Club, apparently. Although swathes of young men and armchair anarchists fell in love with its anti-establishment message, to be fair not everybody was so enamoured with Fight Club first time around citing its supposed promotion of violence, nihilism and toxic masculinity as worrying.

They kind of missed the point though: watch Fight Club a few times and you’ll realise that it’s really satirising the things its critics thought it was promoting. Since that initial backlash though, the nit-pickers have come out in force to dismiss Fight Club as trite and cliched – kind of like Anarchism 101 for the uninitiated.

But we suspect their dislike of Fight Club is far simpler than that. It’s a cult film that became wildly popular and therefore by default is no longer cool and impossible for any discerning film fan to admit they like.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
