10 Great Movies (That Were Led By Terrible Performances)
9. The Untouchables (1987)
The Untouchables is an absolute monster of the crime genre. From the music all the way to the direction, rounded off with a terrific Robert De Niro turn as mob boss Al Capone, Brian De Palma's picture is as entertaining as it is thrilling. There isn't a dull moment in this film. The assembly of the squad and the action sequences are encapsulate the tone. We hate the bad guys and we love the good guys. It's just a shame about the acting. Not so much Sean Connery (who is Hollywood gold), but the team of feds are so unbelievable in their roles; it's almost excruciating to watch. Costner's romantic scenes with his wife are painful in their melodrama; painting a very obvious picture of idyllic home life. His delivery is wooden and lacking any depth or emotion, but as is the rule with all his performances - he is just so entertaining. It's just like that old adage "it's so bad, it's good." Audiences can't quite put their finger on why they love him so much, but they do... just as they love this modern classic.
