10 Great Movies Starring The Brooklyn Nine-Nine Cast

4. The Woodsman

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Newmarket Films

The Woodsman is not for the fainthearted; it is for those who only know Kevin Bacon from the EE adverts. The Apollo 13 star and mobile phone shill is career best in a daring, sensitive, intelligent film about a recently released convicted child sex offender, now struggling to rebuild his life and suppress his harmful urges.

Few would take on a role like this, but Bacon here has the support of his wife Kyra Sedgwick, better known to Nine-Nine fans as the antagonistic Madeline Wuntch. Like sparring partner Andre Braugher, Sedgwick has little of a comedic background, and similarly trusts the material, deadpanning her way to big laughs.

She’s in more familiar territory in The Woodsman as Bacon’s potential love interest Vicki, a tough but entirely human character. This is Bacon’s film and the remainder of the cast take a backseat, but every character is well fleshed out and humanely depicted, particularly Sedgwick’s.

It won’t be a surprise to learn this is not an easy watch, but it is a bold and mature production, one of the few to take on such a challenging subject (the other obvious example, Happiness, is even darker still).
