2017’s independent drama tackles the immensely sensitive topic of sexual assault in an unflinching and brutally honest manner. This is no revenge drama; it isn’t even a cautionary tale as such, but rather an honest look at one of the most horrifying things one can imagine happening.

It’s headlined by a truly brilliant turn from Stephanie Beatriz in one of her only major movie roles - were this film to gain greater exposure, then she’d surely be in higher demand. As Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Diaz she is tasked with playing a complex but tightly shielded character, mining comedy from the smallest movements and expressions.

As Bonnie here she is a similarly coiled spring, a young woman who goes through a trauma and then finds herself having to process it, to deal with clumsy attempts at help from those she loves, and to relive the moment and consider what she may have done differently.

While many would ramp up the angst, Beatriz always plays the role down, shirking from the spotlight and creating a moving, fully realised, human performance. A difficult but important movie.
