10 Great Movies Starring The Cast Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer

7. Cruel Intentions

The Air I Breathe Sarah Michelle Geller
Columbia Pictures

This ever-so-'90s teen reimagining of Les Liaisons Dangereuses is best remembered for one particularly titillating scene involving Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar, but while the focus for many viewers is on the sauciness, it’s actually an acidic and genuinely worthwhile drama with great performances across the board.

Gellar’s, in particular, is somewhat against the grain. While Buffy was by no means puritanical, she’s an all round force for good, and while she errs from the path of nobility, she strives to do better and acts as a protector for those around her.

Here, she’s a sexpot and a provocateur. She launches a bet with her step brother Ryan Philippe, challenging him to deflower the chaste young woman played by Reese Witherspoon. The story is packed with amoral, privileged teens - she’s the worst of the lot, and embraces her villainous side with gusto.

In keeping with the French source material, it’s a film full of double dealing, longing, lust, and regret. In short, there’s much more to Cruel Intentions than that one scene in the park.
