10 Great Movies That Audiences Originally Hated
8. The BFG
Critics generally liked Steven Spielberg's adaptation of this Roald Dahl classic, but a lot more saw it as a little lifeless. In early assessments, the BFG lacked the magic of other Spielberg films, and American audiences appeared to notice that missing magic more than anyone else. As a result, it failed to sell tickets and is considered one of the legendary directors biggest flops.
Redemption is always possible, though and for The BFG, redemption was found overseas in Europe and Asia. Viewers outside of the United States appreciated the whimsical nature of the story and saw the bright spots.
Critics who liked the film became more vocal in support. The film managed to make back its budget and find a successful DVD release. And when people speak about The BFG today, they appear more appreciative.
