10 Great Movies That Scared You Without Showing Anything

1. It Follows

In the opening scene of It Follows, an unnamed girl frantically runs through her suburban town surrounded by people who aren't scared at all. You keep looking around to see what she's running from, but even as she looks in the rear-view mirror at what's supposedly following her, all you see is an empty street.

That's because the monster in It Follows can only be seen by the person it has "attached" itself to. And even the victim doesn't fully understand what the creature looks like, as it constantly appears in the form of different people. It's a brilliant movie in that it surrounds these characters with a force that's often completely unseen.

The main hero is Jay, a young girl who becomes the monster's latest victim. But the audience often slips into the eyes of one of Jay's friends who can't see the monster but who knows it's lurking somewhere around them. Even when you do see the creature while in Jay's point of view, there's still a layer of mystery because this is just the monster taking on an appearance. If it has a "true" form, that's never revealed.

The film is minimalist in a fantastic way and a reminder that evil could be surrounding you at any time, even if you can't see it.
