10 Great Movies You Probably Missed (That You Can Now Catch On Netflix)

1. Side Effects

One of Steven Soderbergh's final films before his "retirement", Side Effects is a complex psychological thriller about a young woman, Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara), who is prescribed an experimental drug that gives her unforeseen side effects.

With a soft opening weekend at the box-office, Side Effects dropped like a rock, and was gone from the top ten just three weeks later. Despite stellar reviews and an A-list cast, the movie's dark tone clearly didn't appeal to audiences who wanted something lighter at the time (Melissa McCarthy's comedy Identity Thief beat Side Effects to the number one spot).

But the movie is up there with Soderbergh's best work. With plenty of twists and a constant sense of dread permeating each frame, the movie is truly gripping, and doesn't let you go until the last second. Even then, you'll be left wanting more, as if the movie's central drug is giving you withdrawal symptoms of your own.

It's not a particularly flashy or showy movie, and it's not simple popcorn entertainment, but if you're in the right frame of mind, Side Effects is a highly rewarding viewing experience.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
