6. Christopher Reeve (Superman III)

'You'll believe a man can fly', went the tagline for Richard Donner's classic Superman adaptation. And, for a whole two movies (or one and a half, depending on which cut you go for), audiences truly did; falling in love with a page-perfect Superman, Lois Lane and dastardly Lex Luthor.

And then came the sequels...

Drained of budget and inspiration, it didn't take the Superman series to become a tragic parody of its earlier self, saddled with ridiculous stories, stupid villains (Richard Pryor, we love you... but no) and bad effects.

And yet, throughout it all, Christopher Reeve remained the face of dignity and the epitome of Superman. Even in the worst of the sequels, Reeve gives it his all - most notably as the evil Tobacco Kryptonite Superman, complete with five o' clock shadow.

Sadly, Reeve would never again get the movie his Superman deserved, but, no matter what the series did to him, he remains the iconic Man of Steel for our time.
