10 Great Recent Horror Movies That Not Enough People Have Seen
4. Beyond the Gates
While most of the films we've mentioned thus far could be considered pretty forward-looking with a very contemporary sensibility, this 2016 horror takes an altogether more retro approach, and most agreeably so.
Though set in the present day, Beyond the Gates harks back to the early 1990s with its central device of a video board game (in the vein of Nightmare/Atmosfear); however, this particular game comes to life around its players, not unlike Jumanji. When two brothers (Graham Skipper, and John Dies At The End's Chase Williamson) discover the game and unwitting start to play, they must complete it no matter the cost.
Director Jackson Stewart's film is another one which sadly lacks the budget to carry off its vision as successfully as we might like, and it has an annoying tendency to dwell on subplots rather than focus on the game itself. But when it's on form, it's tremendous fun, with some nice performances - although the show is 100% stolen by veteran horror actress Barbara Crampton as the game's herald.
