5. John Dies At The End

While the bulk of the films on this list are from comparatively new and young filmmakers, this one comes from seasoned horror veteran Don Coscarelli, director of the Phantasm series and Bubba Ho-Tep. However, his 2012 adaptation of David Wong's cult novel is bursting with youthful irreverence and energy.

At a glance, Dave and John (Chase Williamson, Rob Hayes) are a pair of standard middle American twentysomething slackers, yet thanks to the use of a rare and extraordinarily dangerous drug, they are in contact with alternate realities and otherworldly entities which ordinary people can't see. In the face of all manner of threats, human and otherwise, this very average duo find themselves unwittingly responsible for the fate of all life as we know it.

While it unfortunately lacks the budget to fully do justice to Wong's bizarre epic in terms of visual spectacle, John Dies At The End has an infectious charm thanks to the razor-sharp dialogue, the chemistry between Williamson and Hayes, and some starry supporting turns from Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown and Doug Jones.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
