10 Great Recent Sci-Fi Movies You Probably Haven't Seen
9. Upgrade
Upgrade was produced by Blumhouse Productions, and in their traditions of Get Out, Happy Death Day, The Purge and The Gift, it's yet another cheaply produced horror flick with high quality returns. $16 million back from a $3 million budget isn't quite on the level of Get Out, Happy Death Day or The Gift ($255, $125 and $58 million from budgets of $4.5, $4.8 and $5 million respectively), but it's still a fivefold return in a very niche genre.
Incredibly niche, in fact, as Upgrade didn't just need to contend with being horror, but being a cyberpunk action body horror. That's a combination which will undoubtedly entice a few, but it's also guaranteed to turn many off.
That was the case with Upgrade, which is why it hardly made a mark when it released last year. The plot is built around Grey, a paraplegic who is granted the ability to control his body through a cybernetic chip. It was described as the Six Million Dollar Man meets Death Wish, and that's pretty much spot on.
It's dark and funny in equal doses, and goes psychological with its horror, as well as bringing the gore. More horror than sci fi, it's still built on science fiction.
