10 Great Recent Sci-Fi Movies You Probably Haven't Seen

Colossal is a movie which deserved a lot better than it got. A $15 million budget isn’t eye watering, especially for a sci fi movie with two name brand stars, but a $4 million gross left Colossal a colossal disappointment.

The two Hollywood stars in question were Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis, and while it certainly feels more suited to Sudeikis, Hathaway does a great job in an atypical role. It features a giant (colossal, some might say) creature running amok in Seoul, and might just be the cure if the blockbuster monster movies haven’t been doing it for you of late.

Hathaway plays an unemployed writer who has recently been kicked out of her New York apartment and forced to move back to her home town. Gradually, she realises she’s responsible for the havoc in South Korea.

As you might expect from Sudeikis, it does feature a healthy dose of comedy, though most of it is black as the ace of spades.

Hathaway herself compared it to Being John Malkovich for how it hops around genres, and Being John Malkovich meets Godzilla might be the perfect way to describe it. Audiences turned their backs the first time around, but there’s still a chance it could land cult status.
