Scarlett Johansson has had a much stranger career than most people realise. A fully accredited a-list superstar thanks to her role as Black Widow, she’s also known for having built up a substantial non-Avengers resume in the likes of Lost In Translation, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Black Dahlia and The Prestige.

That’s not even half the story though.

There’s her controversial working relationship with Woody Allen, the criticism she received for taking roles in Rub & Tug and Ghost In The Shell, plus her comprehensive voice over work, including a rescinded Oscar nomination for Her on the basis that she never actually features on screen.

Even with all that in the equation though, it still doesn’t count for her occasional tendency towards absolute weirdness. While Ghost Town and Lucy may be better known examples of this, Under The Skin has slipped under the radar.

In it, Johansson plays a woman known only as The Female, who picks up lonely men in Glasgow with dark and celestial intentions. The story unfolds slowly, almost painfully. This is not the action packed Johansson you may be used to.

Instead, we see her real talent as an actress, carrying this film of no namers on a black and beautiful journey.
