10 Great Sci-Fi Films Ruined By Terrible Endings
3. Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice - The Martha Moment
Possibly leaning towards controversial Zach Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, despite its plethora of negative reviews, has a lot to love. A tormented and grizzled Batman, Superman losing his faith in humanity, and Lex Luthor pulling all the strings from afar. A lot of the brilliance of BvS is hidden within its “Ultimate Cut”, however Snyder delivered a brooding superhero romp, defiant of viewer expectation – something most Marvel films could only dream of. Then came the “Martha” moment…
Eager for the dawn of the Justice League, the “vs” part of BvS, was contained within a mere nine-minute scene. While there were some excellent visuals lifted straight from the pages of the acclaimed graphic novel, the conflict came to its premature end with the reveal that the duo had identically named mothers.
A ridiculous and vehemently underwhelming conclusion to what should have been a rip-roaringly fun punch-up between two of the biggest pop-culture icons. Followed by a dull fight with a big CGI monstrosity and an unconvincing sacrifice the spark of BvS fizzled out. And to top it off Superman’s death was practically vetoed just minutes after it had happened.
